An independent Welsh coffee company has become one of the UK’s first B Corp certified coffee companies.
The South Wales-based ‘Coaltown Coffee Roasters’ was previously recognised by Lonely Planet as one of the UK’s best roasteries and cafes and has now become a certified B Corporation business, meeting the highest standards of social and environmental performance.
The B Corporation certification was devised by global non-profit organisation B Lab, and is awarded to businesses who meet the companies strict criteria on performance as well as public transparency and legal accountability.
To become B Corp certified, Coaltown had to undertake the “rigorous” B Impact Assessment, evaluating how its operations and business model impacted its workers, community, environment, and customers. In addition to this, Coaltown’s supply chain was also scrutinised along with its charitable giving and employee benefits, ensuring the company met the highest level of performance possible.
Commenting on what this certification means to the business, Scott James, founder of Coaltown Coffee, said: “Coaltown is B-Corp and B-Corp is Coaltown. Our founding principles were to be ethical, transparent and sustainable, and B-Corp has allowed us to follow set guidelines to ensure that we keep this promise. It’s been a massive achievement to receive this commendation, and all companies should strive for this as a standard for our future.”
Coaltown as a project, began in James’ father’s garage in 2013, when the young entrepreneur built his own roaster and began supplying coffee shops and restaurants in the local area.
The business grew exponentially over the years and now supplies coffee to various coffee shops and restaurants across the UK from their base in Ammanford, as well as selling products directly to the general public through its websites and specialist food stores.
Later this year, Coaltown plans to launch a unique coffee subscription service, that is sure to prove popular with coffee connoisseurs across the country.
