It has been revealed Wirral Council has granted YPG Developments Ltd a planning permission to turn ex-council office building in Birkenhead into a block of student flats.
The development, known as Hamilton Hub, will be located on Cleve Street by Hamilton Square, which is a Grade I listed building. The 12 million project that consists of 200 accommodation units to support the students at the Marine Education & Training Centre, will include:
- Building expansion to 70,000 sq ft
- Between three and five storeys
- Rooftop extension
- Communal secret garden
- Key facilities including a gym, laundry room and game room
Ming Yeung, Managing Director of YPG Developments Ltd, commented:
“Knowledge-intensive sectors and higher-education establishments are vital regeneration catalysts for both Wirral and the wider Liverpool City region. At YPG, we’re well versed in providing student accommodation to support these industries.”
Councillor Phil Davies, Wirral Council leader, said:
“We welcome developments such as this and, through the new Growth Company, we are well on the road to getting off the ground. It will be the next in a long line of exciting developments, which will transform Birkenhead’s economy, creating high quality offer for skills, retail and leisure in a prime location on our waterfront.”
Furthermore, around 100 job opportunities are expected to be created by the construction work.
